Stopping hyperventilation: Dancing flame

During stress and anxiety we hyperventilate (hyper = excessive, ventilate = to get air). Simply put, we breathe in more than needed, and do not breathe out enough. It can lead to tingling sensations, dizziness, numbness, difficulties in talking and even fainting. It's not dangerous. Just annoying.

This trick is not to set things on fire. (If a candle light calms you, please by all means do use it, but no real flame is needed.)

  1. Imagine that someone holds a candle in front of you. The candle has a flame, a small, delicate flame. You can feel the warmth, but it doesn't burn you.
  2. Now, make the flame dance with your breath, but do not blow it out. Breathe out slowly, carefully, almost like you were whistling.
  3. Make the flame flutter. Imagine how the flame moves and what kind of shadows it creates.
  4. Inhale carefully. The flame will react to your inhalation too, so make sure you're not inhaling too quickly or gulping air. We don't want to swallow the flame, do we?
  5. Exhale again, moving the flame carefully.

Repeat until your breathing calms down.
